Proper Brushing Techniques

Did you know that oral hygiene is linked to your overall health? Many people do not realize that having a healthy smile maintains overall health as well. And the only way to maintain a healthy smile is by using proper brushing techniques.

Brushing your teeth should not be something your rush through every morning just to get rid of morning breath. You should take pride in your smile and remember that when you brush properly, you are removing accumulated plaque and bacteria which develop throughout the day and night which otherwise can cause severe health issues much worse than bad breathe and gingivitis. Even though much of the bacteria found in our mouths are harmless, and many are even beneficial, those that are bad may get into our gums or any cuts where they have a very easy time getting into our bloom stream and spreading throughout the body. Having poor oral hygiene has been linked with heart disease, premature birth and low birth weight, eating disorders and a wide array of other serious diseases.

A great idea to help you with proper brushing is to get a timer, or download a stop watch app if you own a smart phone or iphone, and set it for 2-3 minutes for a thorough brushing. Make sure to brush in circular motions around the gum line, the back of your teeth as well as in between. Try to space out the time so that each section of your mouth is brushed well. Angling the brush to get into smaller areas such as the back of your last molars and behind your front teeth will ensure a better reach. Remember to add flossing to your daily routine to get into the areas you brush cannot reach. You will also want to brush at least twice a day. By practicing proper brushing techniques, you will ensure a lifetime of healthy, beautiful teeth.

The following video demonstrates good brushing habits that everyone should develop.
