Separating Elastics

Separating elastics, also known as Separators, are small elastics that are placed between your back molars to make a very small space to allow the doctor to fit molar bands. The separators are usually placed a few days to a couple of weeks prior to having braces and molar bands fitted to allow time for adequate space. Once they are in, you may feel a small amount of pressure between your molars which mimics the feel of having something stuck between the teeth. It is very important to remember not to pick or play with the elastic with your nails, teeth or an other foreign object. After a couple of hours, the slight pressure will subside. During the time the separators are in your mouth, refrain from chewing sticky foods or candies, as these items may pull the separators out. If a separator falls out, call our office as soon as possible to determine the next step. Our office will guide you with any issues you encounter. Remember, when in doubt, call the office! We are there to help.

This following video which has been kindly produced by www.bracesquestions.com demonstrates how separators are placed.
